After graduated from Tsinghua University, Huan-Wu Peng studied in institute in 1935.In 1940 he got a doctor’s degree in Philosophy in the University of Edinburgh, and a doctor’s degree in Science. He did scientific research in University College Dublin and University of Edinburgh. He was back to China at the end of 1947. He was once professor in Yunnan University and Tsinghua University. Huan-Wu Peng was once research fellow and vice director of Institute of Nuclear Energy and Ministry of the 2nd Machine Building, and vice director of Institute of High Energy Physics of CAS, and the founding director of Institute of Theoretical Physics of CAS. In 1945, together with Max Born, he won the MacDougal-Brisbane Prize of Royal Society of Edinburgh, RSE. In 1955, he was elected as the member of Academic Divisions of CAS.
Professor devoted his whole life to the theoretical physics teaching and research work.. especially, since the great advance of nuclear energy of our nation, he had done a lot of teaching and research work on nuclear reactor theory. He led the theoretical research of making the A-bomb and H-bomb and made extraordinary contribution to the development of nuclear energy and strategic nuclear weapons. He had trained a lot of leading scientists of theoretical physics for our country. He was awarded the first prize of National Natural Science Prize in1982, Top Awards of National Awards for S&T Progress in1985, and In 1999, he was awarded Exploit Medal for "Atomic Bomb, Missile and Satellite" by Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, the State Council and Central Military Commission.
Professor Huan-Wu Peng is one of the earliest master professors in China. For supporting young professors, he retired on his own will, and still worked diligently to train young talents. |
